December 3rd 2010

"the World Cup must revive the spirit of unity and patriotism in the same manner that the 1995 Rugby World Cup brought the nation together."

Introduction
in his new years address Jacob G. Zuma took the chance to derive solace from looking into the future ahead and  focused on the opporutinities that lie ahead. in a few months time a great opportunity for Africa comes, i.e the hosting of the world cup for the first time on African Soil.

The meaning of the world cup in South Africa. In his Address Comrade President J.G. Zuma stressed that the tournament is more than just a sports event. and this is true. Moreover the President explained that Hosting the World cup is a big step in the history for the relativly young nation, which has changed the people around the world look at south africa.

"It must remind us that there is a lot to celebrate about our country. Our successes have made us an inspiration to the world in a manner that many South Africans do not even realise. We have proven to the world that it is possible to emerge from a horrible conflict, and work together as various political parties, to build a successful, peaceful, stable, multiparty constitutional democracy."

In the meantime as we await the start of this great tournament, we can have comfort in the coviction that the tournament is so much more than just a big sports event. May the hosting of the tournament also signify a strong independent and united Africa. Let us hope that the hosting of the World cup will also provide new ground for cultural exchange, understanding and international solidarity across all boarders.
